Well, overtraining is HARD. I'm now finally coming up to the end of the first session of the study and I've never felt quite so weary in my life. For the last six days I've been taking part in a training study here at Loughborough University and it's a fair bit more than I expected.

It's been nice being paid to ride my bike, but the real downsides are having to fill out a POMS (profile of Mood State), DALDA (Daily Attitudes to Life and Diet for Athletes) and diet diary every day. As a prolific user of Training Peaks I'm normally good at keeping track of calories in and out but this is something else! I worked out that I'm having to consume in the region of 6000 calories per day to keep my weight stable. I don't mind eating that much, I'm just dreading the thought of having to scale back once I've finished the study!

Another week down, another one starts. Had a really good week last week, culminating with the Midlands XC Regional Championships.

I didn't really feel massively prepared going into this one despite a good training week beforehand. This was the first week I'd spent training on the SRM powermeter I've been lent for the next six weeks. It really is a revelation training with power - you can more accurately gauge your efforts, it's easier to maintain steady state rides and it's a new expensive toy!

It's been a little while since I last updated this, and not a lot to report really! Last week's training was unfortunately interrupted by a bout of illness - having babysat over the previous weekend I picked up a cold/sore throat/viral bug. Sad face. This put me out for around three days and I decided to be very cautious about getting back on the bike til I recovered properly. This was tempered by an experience last year; I was just coming back from a two week bug and was not fully recovered when I went to race the Sherwood National. The race not only went badly, but I put myself back under for a further three weeks and pretty much wrote off the season's racing plans. I was determined it wouldn't happen again this year!
